Chapter Four

Isla swore she’d seen things. Fieren couldn’t be kissing Delilah. He claimed he wanted her for Christmas, but he’d kissed someone else. Her hands shook as she placed the fragile ornament on the tree. She wanted to run or melt into the floor.

But why should she retreat? She hadn’t done anything wrong.

Delilah laughed and reached for Fieren again. “Where are you going, lover?”

Isla squared her shoulders. She didn’t have time to argue with Delilah. “Are you done?”

Fieren nodded once. “I am. What do you think?”

“It’s good.” Everyone should have plenty to do during the festivities, and the place looked fantastic. “Thank you.”

“Thank you?” He frowned. “We did this. We put in serious effort. This should deserve more than thank you. We should now celebrate.”

“We should.” She folded her arms and forced a brave face. “Not here.”

“Yes, at my place.”

Not right now. There wasn’t time. It was already nightfall, and the elves would be there soon. She shook her head. “In the ballroom. Come on.”

“A quickie in the ballroom? Yes, please.” Fieren grinned. “Let’s go.”

“Yeah.” She strode into the massive room and shut the door, leaving Delilah outside.

“Come here,” he said and reached for her. “I need to kiss you.”

“After… just wait.” She kept space between them. The Christmas lights wouldn’t be so bright this year, and she didn’t feel so jolly all the sudden. “Look, I don’t know what you want from me.”

“What do you mean?” He hooked his fingers in his pockets. “What are you talking about?”

“You…” She had to be strong. If she wanted a relationship with him beyond one night, she had to say it. Defend herself. She might be seen as the ice princess, but she wasn’t totally cold.

“Isla?” He shook his head. “Talk to me.”

“I will.” She clasped her hands and bowed her head. “You told me you wanted me for Christmas. You said you had a Christmas wish, and I have one, too. I don’t get close to people very easily. I didn’t want to fall for you, and I never planned on it. You drove me berserk for so long, like an itch I couldn’t get scratched. You showed up, and I thought you hated me. Then we slept together, and it was great.”

“You agree it was great?” He half-smiled.

“Yeah, it was, but you’re not all in. You’re already cozying up to Delilah,” she said. “I can’t do this if you’re wanting to play the field. I like you. I’ve liked you even before I realized it. I don’t risk my heart easily, but I’m risking it for you. Why do I feel like I’m getting the shaft for Christmas, then? Hmm?”

“Who says you are?” He unhooked his hands from his pockets. “I’m sorry.”

“I thought you might be,” she replied. “I thought I could trust you.” Her heart ached, and she wished she could disappear. She hoped he and Delilah were happy.

“You can trust me.” His voice cracked. “Isla?”

“You might have chosen Delilah, but I fell for you. My heart and my powers are wrapped up in you.
